Avoid the Shock and Horror of the Post Holiday Phone Bill

Have you heard the horror stories of unsuspecting travellers returning from holidays and nearly going into cardiac arrest when faced with their post holiday phone bill?

I speak from experience as it’s happened to me. When faced with a massive bill, the memories of that amazing holiday will soon disappear, I promise you.

If you have a smartphone you absolutely, positively must be aware that you will not be able to use it when overseas the same way you use it at home – that is unless you have the financial backing of someone like Bill Gates.
Talk is not cheap when on holiday

International roaming is what your phone does when you are overseas.  Even though you might be under a phone contract with a company in Australia (let’s just say Telstra), that company will need to work with a local company in the country you’re visiting.

What this means is that your costs are going to skyrocket when you either receive calls when overseas, or if you make a call (and it doesn’t matter whether that call is a local call or a call home to check on the kids).  This cost could be up to $7.00 a minute, either way. Ouch!

How can you avoid those outrageously high costs:

(1)   Buy a Travel Sim (you need to make sure you have international roaming on your phone – check with your phone company)

The easiest way is to purchase a travel sim card in your home country. Just replace your local sim with the new travel sim – you’ll be given new number and voila! – you’re set.  Make sure you understand how to use the travel sim before you leave on holidays.

Some good travel sims in Australia are:

If you are going to be in hotels that offer wifi, you’ll also be able to access these free talk sites, check them out and talk for free.

(2)   Turn Data Roaming off before you leave home, sitting on the plane

If you think that $7.00 a minute to check on the kids back in Australia is steep – that’s nothing when compared to what a short Google session or 10 minutes to check your email will cost.  There are horror stories where a 15 minute session has cost up to $3000.00!

Be a smart traveller and learn how to turn data roaming off.

The small size of the group also means that you travel in smaller, comfortable, high end vehicles between the cities and various sites, so much more relaxing and visually exciting.
