8 Day Small Group Tour of the Amalfi Coast

3 nights Isle of Capri
4 nights Positano

The Amalfi coast can boast some of the most dramatic and stunning stretch of coastline in all of Europe. Listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, the area is well known for its scenic beauty, picturesque towns and rugged terrain. The Isle of Capri is a place of legend… once the playground of the Roman Emperors and now a playground for the rich and famous.

The island juts out of the sea at the far end of the Sorrentine peninsula and is surrounded by gorgeous cliff bound scenery… hillsides, villas and tiny lanes draped in bougainvillea and honeysuckle. Our Capri hotel overlooks the brilliant azure waters of the Mediterranean and in Positano, the lovely town itself. The Amalfi Coast base will include visits to Pompeii, Positano, Sorrento, Ravello, Amalfi and the amazing coast road.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Capri

Pick up from the train station in Naples. (We can easily organise a pickup from either the Rome airport or a central Rome hotel). On our drive to our first destination, Isle of Capri, we will make a detour to visit Pompeii, a Roman town completely destroyed by a volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius. Frozen in time, the town has been excavated and is revealing and detailed about Roman life – a fascinating tour. After lunch at a wonderful local restaurant (close to Pompei) where we will taste fresh homemade pasta and local wine, we will continue on to Sorrento where we will board our high-speed ferry to the Isle of Capri. The view on arrival at the Marina Grande is stunning, a bustling harbour with a backdrop of sheer cliffs and colourful houses.
Breakfast and Lunch with wine.

Day 2 - Capri

For the more active among us, we can take a wonderful walk to what was once the Palace of Emperor Tiberius, the Villa Jovis. Our pretty jaunt will take us past many gardens, homes and back lanes of Capri. It is possible to view the Amalfi coast and the Bay of Naples from several vantage points along the way. For others, this is the best time to check out the fantastic and exclusive shopping of Capri with all the best designers represented…or just relax beside one of the wonderful lanes that abound in great coffee shops.
Breakfast & Lunch with wine

Day 3 - Capri

Today is a day of leisure on the gorgeous isle of Capri. It's possible to take a boat around the island to take in the gorgeous blue waters and to discover the amazing rock formations, coves, bays and the geology. Or you might want to relax sitting by your hotels pool, or even a long leisurely lunch.
To discover the island of Capri is quite a feast.
Breakfast

Day 4 - Positano

We leave Capri and board our high-speed hydrofoil to Positano, which will be our base for the next 4 nights. The hillside village on the southern most tip of the Amalfi drive is stunning when approached by sea, filled with colourful houses seemingly clinging to the cliff face. Our lovely family run hotel is perched on the Positano hill and gives great views of the town of Positano. Your guide will take you on a walking tour of Positano, a village of legends and wonderful produce.
Dinner at leisure.

Day 5 - Positano

Today our driver will take us to two wonderful towns, Amalfi and Ravello. The approach by car to Amalfi is certainly dramatic, the town has so much to offer it has been popular as a seaside resort since Edwardian times. We can spend some time here at the quaint shops, meander through the quiet lanes or climb the steps to the magnificent duomo (church) before making our way to Ravello, said to be the jewel of the Amalfi coast. The best views of the coast can be had in Ravello, which is spread across the top of one of the coast’s mountains. We will take a wonderful walk with spectacular views of the town and mountains to the Villa of Cimbrone to enjoy the magnificent garden and villa.

(This walk does include some stairs - if you have mobility issues, this might be a problem)

Dine at leisure in Positano.
Breakfast and lunch with wine

Day 6 - Positano - A day at leisure in Positano

Today we spend the morning in Positano discovering the great shopping, art galleries or coffee shops. We will then be transported by boat to a fun open-air restaurant and cove where we will have some great local seafood with local wine. It is possible to swim from this cove or just soak up the sun under one of the umbrellas with a good book. For the more active amongst us, it is possible to take the ‘Walk of the Gods’ that takes us past wonderful local hamlets and gives us spectacular views (optional).

Dine at leisure in Positano.
Breakfast and lunch included with wine

Day 7 - Positano

Sorrento will be explored today, this busy little town, the largest on the Amalfi coast is bright and lively. Here we can walk along the coast and find the local beaches or wander the lanes that run through the centre of the town and meet at Piazza Tasso, filled with restaurants and bars. A great spot for a pizza or aperitivo. The shopping can be widely varied with handicrafts to high fashion on offer. After an orientation with your Amalfitana guide you will have free time here to explore Sorrento on your own before returning to gorgeous Positano.
Breakfast & lunch or dinner

Day 8 - Positano

We depart the wonderful Amalfi coast and Capri and make our way back to a central drop off point in Naples. It is so easy to extend your time in Italy by taking a train to Florence, Venice , Milan or Lake Como etc…the options are endless. Please contact us for more information.

Occasionally, we visit Positano and then Capri.
Our itineraries are carefully planned and well thought out but touring Italy can sometimes offer wonderful surprises. The magic of travelling in such a small group allows us to cater for this spontaneity and it is sometimes these unplanned occurrences that can be the most memorable. The rich tapestry of experiences and the characters you meet along the way will make this guided tour of Italy something special and one you will remember for a lifetime.
