Itinerary

Milan (1 night)

Welcome to Italia. We meet tonight for a welcome drink to get to know our Ciao Bella travellers. We begin our tour of northern Italy tomorrow morning with a walking tour of the highlights of central Milan, including the spectacular duomo, the galleria etc., before a delicious morning tea at La Rinascente which gives a spectacular view of the rear of the duomo’s statues.
After lunch departure for Stresa
Included:  Welcome, aperitivo drink

Stresa - Lake Maggiore (2 nights)

Day 1 - A visit to Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore and the exquisite Villa Borromeo on the tiny, private island. Count Vataliano Borromeo began the construction of this opulent Baroque palace and its splendid gardens in 1632. A tour of the ornate family home showcases priceless works of art, tapestries and furniture in an elegant and sumptuous setting. For those hungry we will venture out to lunch on Isola Pescatori (very close) then return to lovely Stresa.
Included: Breakfast, ferry, transport and entrances

Menaggio - Lake Como(3 nights)

On our way to Menaggio, we will travel by private minibus around the Lake until we reach the lovely town of Locarno in Switzerland, we’ll take a break to enjoy a coffee in one of the cafes and a short walk before we make our way to Lugano (Switzerland) where we will have lunch with the glorious views of the Lake.

Menaggio is the perfect place to base ourselves while we discover Lake Como and the gorgeous towns of Varenna and Bellagio.  Bellagio is seen as the ‘pearl of the lake’ and really is spectacular.   We will have plenty of time here to take one of the self guided historic walking tours and of course, lunch in the one of the lakeside restaurants or cafes.  Varenna is also a wonderful lakeside town, maybe not as pretty as Bellagio but definitely worth a visit. Time permitting we will also visit the town of Tremezzino and Villa Carlotta and its lovely gardens.
Included:  breakfast with walking tour of Bergamo, ferries, all transport and entrances

Verona ( 2 nights)

After our three nights in Menaggio, we will travel by car along the east side of Lake Como until we reach the historic and beautiful town of Bergamo.  Here we will have a guide to take us to La Citta Alta (the higher part of the city) where we'll explore its walled medieval center – straight out of a storybook illustration – we’ll visit the Piazza Vecchia, the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, and the Cappella Colleoni. After a tasty lunch here our northern Italy tour continues to Verona, the land of Romeo and Juliet.
Arriving into Verona late afternoon, we’ll visit the centre of the town, Piazza Erbe with its stunning architecture and the amazing arena (think Colosseum, just smaller).
Verona has the best little bars and there is nothing better than to enjoy an aperitivo (with the accompanying tasty little morsels) in front of the arena.
The following morning we’ll take a walking tour:
Verona has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its Roman amphitheatre, the third largest after the Colosseum in Rome and still used for operas and other cultural entertainment also the many other buildings that have survived since Roman times... as well as for its outstanding wine and cuisine. Our walking tour this morning reveals the many charms of the city, and we’ll be introduced to Juliet’s balcony along with the association of locals who reply to the many letters written to Juliet - how romantic!

Breakfast with one dinner with wine, walking tour of Verona, orientation tour

Bologna (3 nights)

Day 1 - Get to know Bologna the best way - through our stomachs. Bologna is home to the oldest university in the world! (or so they say) and also the most picturesque porticos.
Get a taste of Bologna’s enviable food scene on a walking tour around the old medieval market streets. In the company of a food-obsessed guide, learn about the culinary heritage of Bologna, which is the cradle of famous Italian foods such as tortellini, mortadella and its namesake Bolognese sauce. Browse the cobbled lanes of Quadrilatero, a cornucopia of culinary treats and tantalizing products. Visit family-owned stores and artisan producers. Along the way, taste delicious food samples, such as prosciutto and cheese, chocolate or gelato and espresso.
Day 2 - A visit to Ravenna
We’ll take a train to Ravenna to visit this fascinating town and its amazing 1500 year old churches and mosaics.
Breakfasts, transport to Ravenna, walking food tour of Bologna

Florence (2 nights)

We’ll travel by train to Florence - the birthplace of the renaissance.  The following morning, your guide will take you on an orientation tour of the leather markets and the new museum (just completed) Opera del duomo.  We will have tickets to climb the duomo tower and also Giotto’s tower.  We will also visit an amazing renaissance house right in the centre of the city, just as it was during the renaissance times.
Included:  Breakfast and dinner with wine.
